Making Peace with Moderation.

For most of my practice, I've said that I hate the word "moderation". It's too ambiguous.  It means different things to different people. It lacks the structure that people need. People equate the word with freedom.  And it just doesn't work.  Right? Right?I get it now. Moderation is OK, in fact it's even good for us. It means that we can be flexible in finding the balance between our needs and wants, without having to swing to the extremes of diet and exercise! And the flexibility to do just that is what helps us to have a healthy relationship with food, without the rules imposed on us by a passing trend. Every day I work with people (mostly women) to move away from the restriction and rules of diet culture and find peace with food, and their bodies.  And without the concept of "moderation" there is no flexibility. Moderation puts YOU in charge, not food rules.

How to Make "moderation" Work For You

  • Ditch the 'should' and 'shouldn't' language. Don't bring morals into your food choices. It's ok to do what FEELS good.

  • Be Mindful and Intuitive about your eating. Mindful eating practices that encourage you to savour the process of eating increase your satisfaction. And learning to eat intuitively can help you understand your hunger and fullness cues, and drop into emotional hunger cues.

  • Move your Body Because it Feels Good. Don't run for an hour so you can enjoy the birthday cake. Run because you like it, and have the cake if you want it.
